Workshop: Telling stories with data

Infographics have long been a staple of of magazine design, and data journalism is a rapidly expanding discipline – but many publications could be using their data more creativeily and effectively.

Whether it’s survey results, industry data, business information or quizzes and games – there are plenty of ways to present the numbers in print and online without needing expensive technology.

In this hour-long workshop, magazine journalist and data visualisation specialist Alan Rutter will introduce the key principles for approaching data storytelling, the common pitfalls to avoid, and how to apply the journalistic skills you already have to go beyond simple aesthetic appeal and create genuine value for readers.

Alan Rutter has worked as a writer and editor for numerous magazines, including as features editor at Time Out. He oversaw the launch of tablet editions of WIRED, GQ and Vanity Fair for Condé Nast UK. When he’s not writing, he trains publishing businesses, government departments and charities in data visualisation.
