Cover Versions: Behind the scenes with design ideas

There’s a fine line between completely ripping off ideas and being influenced from the past to create something new. Especially for Magfest, award-winning art director Mark Neil – the design mind behind some of the best covers from Time Out, NME and The Big Issue – allows us behind the scenes of the creative process to reveal how he draws from the past to deliver his vision for the future.

He’ll talk about the importance of inspiration in how ideas are formed and how our own personal worlds can influence our ideas.

Everything has a beginning, middle and end – but the beginning of creative projects and the thought processes that led to them is often obscured. By delving into some rejected designs, Mark will shed light on the secret world behind the covers.

About Mark Neil

Mark began his career working as a graphic designer for design agencies in Glasgow. He joined The Big Issue in Scotland in 2005 as Designer and went on to direct award-winning design for the Scotland edition in Glasgow, then the UK edition based in London.

As the last Art Director for the newsstand edition of NME he was named PPA Designer of the Year (consumer) in 2014.

He joined Time Out in 2015 where he led a successful global redesign for the brand.

In July this year, Mark joined The Telegraph's magazine team as Art Director for its premium titles.
